Pupils enter the Dragon’s Den

Pupils at a West Lothian school have got some specialist help to make their business venture a success.

St Nicholas Primary School in Broxburn, invited Scots entrepreneur Shaf Rasul from BBC Dragon’s Den Online, to officially open their new social enterprise business, a Fairtrade community cafe called Food For Thought.

The cafe will be run by the pupils for the school community, the elderly and other community groups, working in partnership with local charitable organisations.

Profits from the business will be used to support local vulnerable groups and St Nocholas’ sister school in Ghana.

Head teacher, Karen Brown, said “Pupils had been exploring global citizenship and began to explore how they could make a difference in our school and local community whilst continuing to support the Fairtrade cause.”

“They decided to embark on a social enterprise initiative and start up a Fairtrade community cafe and the idea for Food for thought was born.”

Shaf Rasul, who cut the ribbon and declared the Food for Thought Cafe open for business, said : “It gives me great pleasure to officially open their community cafe and I will be watching closely as they meet their objective of bringing a positive impact within their local community and driving profits back towards their charity partners.”
