Winner of our Panasonic 50″ HDTV Announced

A Treharris man has won a nationwide Twitter competition organised by new website www.geeks.co.uk.

Mark Watkins, 31 from the town near Cardiff won the competition for tweeting about the technology website on his Twitter page.

This is just one of the many competitions run via the social networking phenomenon, which is often used to maximize emerging websites’ popularity in a short space of time.

Mr. Watkins, an SAS database programmer for CRO in Merthyr Tydfil, has scooped a 50” Panasonic Plasma Screen TV worth £1000 for simply plugging the site on the micro-blogging portal.

Mark, whose Twitter username is Blademrk said: “I can’t believe I’ve actually won something, I’m now trying to think, where is the best place to put it? Shocked, totally shocked.”

www.geeks.co.uk editor Ally Millar said: “Mark was pretty stunned on the phone, he went really quiet and I had to ask if he was ok.”

“It was a great competition and really got the site noticed across the net.  We had nearly 13,000 entries but Mark was the lucky winner of the massive TV. Our members have been waiting with bated breath for weeks now to see who has scooped the prize.”

www.geeks.co.uk is owned by Scots Online Dragon Shaf Rasul and covers news articles, irreverent features and reviews on the latest gadgets, phones, MP3s, computers and games consoles.

The site will also act as a forum for the geek community who will be able to offer their views on the latest gadgets and gamer products coming to market.

Rasul – who features in an online version of the BBC’s Dragons Den alongside American Julie Meyer – has plans to develop the online magazine into the most popular gadget site in the UK and views the involvement of Twitter as essential.

“Websites today need to develop an early cult following on Twitter and Facebook as part of a targeted viral and social marketing strategy.”
