Cleaning up ... with crap
- Published Date: Saturday 21st November 2009
A FIRM backed by Dragons' Den star Shaf Rasul has made an instant fortune - selling CRAP.
Boffer.co.uk shifted over 10,000 Bag o' Crap products yesterday for £4.99 each, making almost £50,000.
Customers are warned that the mystery boxes are full of 'leftover crap' from Boffer's Edinburgh HQ - and could be anything from a new TV to empty DVD cases.
But the bags have become a internet hit, with customers posting clips of themselves opening their 'gifts' on YouTube.
Scottish Sun columnist Shaf said: "It's basically a grown-up lucky bag but I still can't believe 10,000 paid a fiver, plus £2.99 postage, for a bag o' crap."
Shaf - who stars in the BBC's online version of Dragons' Den - got involved with Boffer in 2007.
He said: "I got a call from Cheryl Hardwick, who was a boss's secretary at Birmingham firm IT Solution.
"They were £600,000 in debt and close to administration but she wanted me to know how to buy them.
"I thought she was crazy but I had faith in her and spoke to the creditors. A few months later she'd paid back half the debt and had the idea for Boffer.
"It puts on a deal a day for 24 hours and the crunch has been great for them.
"Last week they bought bankrupt stock Mazda cars and sold 27 in a day."
But Shaf, 39, from Alloa, believes the Bag o' Crap was Boffer's big break. He said: "Manufacturers are lining up to give them TVs and gadgets as they know there's a chance it'll end up on You Tube. It's like a secret Santa.
"You'll soon find out if Christmas - or The Grinch - has come early."
